Lone parents are entitled to various financial benefits-Tax Credits and Child benefits (contact the Tax Credits office help line online or by phone), Housing benefits and free school meals and uniforms (Council office), Help with free prescriptions, (contact your GR) but all depend on your individual circumstances.
For families where both parents or partners work but their income is considered as Low income there are financial helps and the best you could do is go to Advice shop on South bridge ( no appointment required and speak to an adviser.
The advices are free and confidential. There you can get the application forms you need and get help with the process.
